The idea and ideal of love
OKAY I SUCK AT RESISTING TEMPTATIONS.
There, out. Now I'm clear of my sins cos I've confessed them!
I realize we've all fallen horribly in love with the ideal and the idea of love after watching JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE, which was not a bad and rather hilarious movie, on wednesday with zhihua. Cos we were talking about how we wanted so much for john tucker to have changed (the typical cliche jerk-turned-good-guy-because-of-a-girl plot) and for both the lead characters to end up together. But you have to admit, it was quite a good twist to what 'honest' means :D Shadn't reveal spoilers!
So because we've all fallen in love with the idea of love, this is why, as the movie says, the liars always get the girls. Cos the liars are able to spin this web of illusion and BE what we always thought love was, and that is their key to getting the girls. This is why girls fall for them, and why jerks have it all. Sad fact, but true. And then you link it to seduction and the illusions that the seductresses spin to get the guys. This is why they are so successful -- cos everyone has a idea of what love should be, and these women are able to spin this web so skilfully so much so that they make themselves THE ideal women, the greek goddesses of these men's wet dreams. And this is why they hold the power, cos when you're in control of the web you're spinning, when you can tell what's real from what's isn't, when you selectively choose what to reveal, you are able to get them in your grasp and control them. You hold the lines in the relationship, you make them fall head-over-heels into your spell.
It seems that perfection is actually an illusion. What to believe, and what not to? How do you ever know? The essential question -- what is love? If it's not the way the media portrays it to be, then what is it?
And then you can link it to pygmalion too, as suggested by zhihua. Cos the person that john tucker falls in love with is actually yet another delusion, not her original character but a creation. Though made by girls instead of a guy this time, they've actually modelled her after man's expectations. Food for thought! This movie can be deeper than critics think. (:
